EMT JOB DESCRIPTION:

An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT/EMT-P) functions as a primary care provider in the pre-hospital setting. The EMT responds to emergency calls to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured, and transports the patient to a medical facility. 

RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Provides basic life support, including patient assessment, airway management, administration of oxygen, use of the automatic defibrillator, IV monitoring, assisting patients with prescribed medications or those authorized by Maryland State Protocol, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Drives  vehicle equipment  in a safe manner under all conditions; knowledge of the first due area and the community we serve; knowledge of the highway system
  • Proper use, terminology and knowledge of Somerset County's Emergency Operations Center radio system
  • Expected at times to work under the direction of a Paramedic and assume a support role
  • Understand all applicable legal, moral and ethical issues surrounding emergency medical service and driving laws
  • Functions within the scope of care as defined by state, regional and local regulatory agencies
  • Must be dedicated to learning through continuing education and maintenance of licensures and certifications; it is the EMT’s responsibility to renew licensures prior to their expiration date per MIEMSS criteria
  • Reassuring patients and bystanders by working in a confident, efficient manner
  • Use judgment and be able to prioritize decisions and act quickly in the best interest of the patient
  • Function at an optimum level in a non-structured environment that is constantly changing
  • Avoid mishandling and undue haste while working expeditiously to accomplish a task
  • Has a basic understanding of stress response and methods to ensure personal well- being
  • Maintains ambulance is in efficient operating condition before and after each response; in accordance with local, state or federal regulations, decontaminates the interior of the vehicle after transport of every patient
  • Reports verbally and in writing  observations and emergency medical care of a patient 
  • Completes all EMEDS reports and applicable paperwork within the 24 hour timeframe as per COMAR
  • Attends station clean ups, drill, in house training, community details, meetings and community events according to Abingdon Fire Company Standard Operating Guideline's and LOSAP qualifications

  • Good judgment is essential
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing 
  • Capable of adapting to situations with violence and emotional instability in multicultural settings 
  • Must possess critical reasoning skills and be capable of applying them effectively in stressful situations
  • Self motivation is essential

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, tools and equipment.
  • Must be able to use body members to work, lift, move or carry objects or materials
  • Must be able to exert in excess of one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of fifty pounds of force frequently
  • Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for very heavy work.
